The collection, edited by Joshua Whitehead, features the work of queer, nonbinary and Two-Spirit Indigenous writers, who centre their Indigiqueer identities in rich and imaginative narratives that upend familiar sci-fi and fantasy tropes. But from the wreckage, hope emerges tentatively and joyfully, like a flower growing up through concrete. Without suggesting we can avert disaster, these stories reckon with the inevitability of war, global warming, famine and other apocalyptic events. If you’re feeling grim about the future - and who could blame you, after the year we’ve had - then Love after the End is here to give you hope. Marian tells Walter of Anne Catherick, a young lady no longer with them who dressed in white and bore a close resemblance to Laura. There is a remarkable similarity between Laura and the woman in white, which Walter mentions to Marian. Walter departs the next day for Limmeridge where he meets Frederick, his niece Laura, and her half-sister Marian Halcombe. Some time later Walter overhears a conversation between a policeman and a coach passenger suggesting that the woman is deranged and has escaped from an asylum. Shortly afterwards the woman rushes away and boards a coach. Before he leaves for Cumberland, he meets a woman dressed in white, who tells him she used to live at Limmeridge. Let the words of each of the poems enthrall you, and let their suggestions of mysterious forces lurking in the darkness around you awaken those long suppressed primeval fears. When reciting these poems, it is suggested that you turn the lights down low - or, even better, switch them off altogether - and light a candle! Ensure that some suitably creepy music is playing softly in the background, and then start reading the poems aloud in a low, dramatic voice. There are poems about ghosts and witches, spirits and spectres, dead men coming back to avenge themselves upon the living, and numerous other nefarious and creepy scenarios. Poetry can make an excellent mood setter for your ghostly gatherings, and below you will find some really atmospheric and spooky poems to get your Halloween celebrations well and truly underway. Halloween is the perfect night to gather by the light of a lone candle, or to sit by the flickering flame of a log fire and conjure up creepy images of ghosties and ghoulies, long-leggetie beasties, and things that go bump in the night. Miss Suzy has a cozy home and sings little songs while going about her work. She enjoys taking care of her home, making acorn pudding, sweeping her moss carpets, and dusting her firefly lamps. Miss Suzy is very content in her little house in the oak tree. (It was my very favorite picture book when I was a girl.) It is perfect for early elementary aged learners. The picture book, Miss Suzy, can be a great launch story for a variety of learning activities, creative writing, and art projects. It teaches important themes such as friendship, bravery, and love in the context of the charming illustrations. Miss Suzy by Miriam Young and pictures by Arnold Lobel is the delightful story of a little gray squirrel who lives “in the tip, tip, top of a tall oak tree.” First published by Parents’ Magazine Press in 1964, this classic book has been enjoyed by generations of children. McGregor, 49, and Boorman, 54, have taken two previous adventure motorcycle trips for TV. That was just a year ago, when McGregor and Boorman met at the bottom of South America in freezing weather to begin a trip that would take them from Ushuaia, Argentina, through 13 countries and two continents before rolling into the relatively safe haven of Los Angeles three months later. The show chronicles the journey in 11, one-hour episodes.McGregor and Boorman travel 13,000 miles in 100 days on electric Harley-Davidson motorcycles."Long Way Up" is a new Apple+ TV documentary series starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. If I meet someone who hasn’t seen it, I make them watch it. I adore this film! I’ve watched it maybe twenty times. More, they’re the films I watch over and over and recommend to friends. I’m going to limit myself to five and they’re not super representative of the entire genre. I could have listed a hundred movies here. Here, I want to talk about the movies that inspired me. Not so much, but as you’ll read in some of my other tour posts, studying self-defense has been amazing in other ways. So you can imagine my delight when I discovered that the dojo I finally picked out uses black uniforms.įinally, my dreams of being a ninja could be realised! (Maybe not kill, but leave a bruise that will have them thinking twice before taking me on a second time.) Also, black is very flattering. I also want the ability to kill someone with my thumb. Have you ever watched an epic martial arts film and thought, “I wish I could do that?” Whether it’s authentic or not, I want to fly about on wires, pretending that years of training and meditation have given me wings-and skill with a sword. Kelly tells us about her favourite Martial Arts movies and she brought a giveaway to participate in! A warm love bytes welcome to author Kelly Jensen joining us here today for her blog tour on her release of “Block and Strike”. How will voters know whether a video of a political candidate saying something offensive was real or generated by AI? Will people be willing to pay artists for their work when AI can create something visually stunning? Why follow certain authors when stories in their writing style will be freely circulating on the internet? There’s certainly something unsettling about the ease with which people can be duped by these fakes, and I see it as a harbinger of an authenticity crisis that raises some difficult questions. And the image of Pope Francis sporting a Balenciaga jacket that appeared in March 2023? That was also a fake.Īll were made with the help of generative AI, the new technology that can generate humanlike text, audio and images on demand through programs such as ChatGPT, Midjourney and Bard, among others. The photograph that won an international photography competition that same month wasn’t a real photograph. It turns out that pop stars Drake and The Weeknd didn’t suddenly drop a new track that went viral on TikTok and YouTube in April 2023. It's important to the plot but the characters in this section of the book aren't as interesting or well-developed as Dan and Abe. Unfortunately, just as that relationship is becoming interesting, the novel takes a left turn into a very long story within a story. Langan takes the time to develop these characters (particularly Abe) into people we care about. It gets off to a very strong start as we meet Abe and Dan, two men dealing with terrible loss who find solace together in fishing. It's been described as a literate "cosmic" (ie: Lovecraftian) horror novel and that sounded right up my alley. Borne, learning to speak, learning about the world, is fun to be with, and in a world so broken that innocence is a precious thing. Yet, against her instincts-and definitely against Wick’s wishes-Rachel keeps Borne. There is an attachment she resents: in this world any weakness can kill you. Borne reminds Rachel of the marine life from the island nation of her birth, now lost to rising seas. Borne as salvage is little more than a green lump-plant or animal?-but exudes a strange charisma. One day, Rachel finds Borne during a scavenging mission and takes him home. Rachel ekes out an existence in the shelter of a run-down sanctuary she shares with her partner, Wick, who deals his own homegrown psychoactive biotech. The city is dangerous, littered with discarded experiments from the Company-a biotech firm now derelict-and punished by the unpredictable predations of a giant bear. In Borne, a young woman named Rachel survives as a scavenger in a ruined city half destroyed by drought and conflict. |
